Grassley: Stop the clock. This committee is running this hearing. Not the White House, not Don McGahn, not even you as a nominee. We're here because Dr. Ford asked for an opportunity to be heard.
Grassley: We are not suspending this hearing.
Durbin: If you turn to McGahn and say that for the sake of my reputation, I will not be an obstacle of an investigation. [Kavanaugh: I welcome whatever this committee wants.]
Durbin: I want to know what you want. You can't have it both ways.
Kavanaugh: This thing was sprung on me after being held.
Durbin: If there's no truth to her allegation, the FBI will show that. [The FBI doesn't reach conclusions, they just do what you're doing, asking questions and typing up reports.]
Durbin: We've narrowed down a period of time when Judge would have been working on Safeway. We can connect dots. Why would you resist that?
Why would you resist an FBI investigation? [I will do whatever the committee wants to do.]
Kavanaugh: Look, Senator, I've said I wanted a hearing.
Durbin: I think an FBI investigation will help all of us.
Grassley: Seems to me like if you want to know something, the witness is here.
Graham: When you met with Feinstein in August, did you know that her staff had already contacted a lawyer? [I did not]
Graham is extremely incensed.
Graham: This is the most unethical sham since I've been in politics. If you [Democrats] wanted the truth, you wouldn't have done what you've done to this guy. I hope the American people can see through this sham.
Graham: Boy you all want power and I hope you don't get it.
Graham: This is not a job interview. This is hell. This is going to destroy the ability of good people because of this crap, a high school yearbook.
Graham: Ashley, you should be proud of this. You raised a daughter with the good character to pray for Dr. Ford.
Graham: To my Democratic colleagues, this is the most despicable thing I've ever seen in politics.
To my Republican colleagues: If you vote no, you're legitimizing the worst thing I've ever seen in politics.
Whitehouse: One reason we are looking at yearbook is that it is relatively consistent in time with events at issue and appears to be your words. [We submitted things to the editors, I don't know if they changed anything.]
Kavanaugh: Have at it if you want to go through my yearbook.
Whitehouse: Beach week Ralph club biggest contributor. What's Ralph? [Throwing up. I have a weak stomach.]
Whitehouse: The vomiting you referenced related to the consumption of alcohol? [I was the top of my class.]
Whitehouse: And did the word ralph relate to alcohol? [I like beer.]
The Ralphing refers to throwing up from alcohol? [I worked my tail off academically]
What does "boofing" refer to in the yearbook? [Flatulence]
Whitehouse: Renate Alumnius. What's Alumnius? [I explained in opening statement, she was a great friend of ours.]
Kavanaugh: Media circus reported it referred to sex. It did not.
Whitehouse: Devil's triangle? [Drinking game. Three glasses in a triangle.] And? [It's a quarters game.]
Whitehouse has other examples which Kavanaugh gives his explanations for.
Whitehouse: Who won anyway? Was that drinking? [With friends, we stopped caring about the game.]
Cornyn: I don't think we've seen anything like this since the McCarthy era. Are you aware you've been accused of multiple crimes? [Yes]
Cornyn: This is not a job interview. You've been accused of crimes. To vote against your nomination, we would have to conclude you are a serial liar who has exposed himself to legal jeopardy.
Cornyn: Fair process means people who make an accusation should come forward with evidence.
Cornyn: You are right to be angry about delays in your ability to come forward to clear your name.
Klobuchar: We have a duty to advise and consent. I decided I needed to look into this. Why don't you just ask the president to re-open the FBI investigation?
Kavanaugh: The committee is doing the investigation.
Klobuchar: You could keep this open so that we can talk. You've come before us, but we have witnesses like Mark Judge who have not.
Kavanaugh: Mark Judge has provided sworn statements.
