Kavanaugh: I asked for a hearing immediately, but it took 10 days. In the meantime, my family has been destroyed. This has been harmful to my family, the Supreme Court, and the country. I welcomed any kind of investigation.
Kavanaugh: I know that any investigation will clear me.
Kavanaugh: I was not at the party described by Dr. Ford.
Kavanaugh: This process has become a national disgrace. You have replaced advice and consent with search and destroy.
Kavanaugh: Shortly after I was nominated, a Democratic leader said he would oppose with everything he had. Another called me "evil." Think about that. "Evil."
Kavanaugh: I understand the passions of the moment. I would say to those senators: your words have meaning. Americans listened carefully to you. Is it any surprise that people have been willing to do anything, to make any threat against my family or allegation against me?
Kavanaugh: You sowed the wind. I fear for decades to come the country will reap the whirlwind.
Kavanaugh: My first hearing was an embarrassment, but at least it was an old-fashioned attempt at "borking."
As perhaps to be expected, since he's going second, Kavanaugh is departing significantly from his submitted testimony that was released yesterday.
Kavanaugh: This allegation was held for weeks, used only when I couldn't be defeated on the merits, over Dr. Ford's wishes.
Kavanaugh: Then came nonsense smears reported uncritically by the media. This has destroyed my family and my good name.
Kavanaugh: This two-week effort has been an orchestrated political hint.
This testimony is very different from the statement that was previously made public.
Kavanaugh: This is a circus. The consequences will extend past my nomination, for decades. This grotesque character assassination will dissuade good people from serving their country.
Kavanaugh: I always try to be on the sunrise side of the moment [echoes first hearing], but today I fear for the future. I told a federal judge must be independent, not swayed by pressure. I will not be intimidated into withdrawing from this process.
Kavanaugh: You may defeat me in the final vote, but you'll never get me to quit, never. I'm hear to tell you the truth. I've never sexually assaulted anyone.
Kavanaugh: Allegations of sexual assault must always be taken seriously.
Kavanaugh: Due process means listening to both sides.
Kavanaugh: I'm the only child of Martha and Ed Kavanaugh. They are here today. My mother overcame barriers of workplace sexual harassment. She became a trailblazer.
Kavanaugh is becoming emotional talking about his mother's career.
Kavanaugh: Onslaught of last-minute allegations does not ring true. I am not questioning that Dr. Ford may have been sexually assaulted. But I am innocent of this charge. I intend no ill will to Dr. Ford.
Kavanaugh tearing up, saying his daughter prayed for Dr. Ford. We mean no ill will.
This after Kavanaugh had been speaking very forcefully, sounding angry.
Kavanaugh now going over his career, including passing six FBI investigations, having been in the public sphere for decades.
Kavanaugh: When nominated to the DC Circuit, was thoroughly vetted, including two confirmation hearings.
Kavanaugh: I passed another FBI background investigation for this nomination.
Kavanaugh: And until last week, no one had ever accused me of sexual assault. That's because nothing of this kind ever happened.
Kavanaugh: Turning to specifics, I deny the allegation against me by Dr. Ford.
I categorically and unequivocally deny the allegation.
I have never done that to her or to anyone.
Kavanaugh: Dr. Ford's allegation stems from party she says she attended in summer 1982. I was 17 years old. When my friends and I spent time together, it was normally with all-girls Catholic schools. Dr. Ford did not attend one of those schools.
Kavanaugh: We did not travel in the same social circles. It is possible we met, but I do not recall that. All of the people identified by Dr. Ford have said they do not remember such a party happening.
Kavanaugh: Allegation not only uncorroborated, but refuted, including by longtime friend of hers.
Kavanaugh: None of the people named at party lived near the country club. She says she had one beer but not how she got to the house, or home, or whose house it was.
Kavanaugh: My dad started keeping calendars of his life as a diary. [He's getting emotional talking about his dad.]
Kavanaugh: In 9th grade [lot of pauses as he is tearing up], I started keeping calendars as a diary, as I have for 38 years.
Kavanaugh: The calendars are about what you expect from a kid -- goofy parts and embarrassing parts.
For him, as for his dad, it's both a calendar and a diary.
Kavanaugh: I was out of town almost every weekend night until football training camp in August.
Kavanaugh going through calendars.
Kavanaugh: If party described in summer 1982 on weekend night, my calendars show that I was not there.
Kavanaugh: During the weekdays, I was out of town for two weeks. In town, spent much of my time working, working out, lifting, playing basketball, or hanging out and having beers with friends.
Kavanaugh: I didn't have church on my calendar on Sunday, but I also didn't have brushing my teeth.
