R is the number that that opinion is for this Term. So Lomax is 42nd opinion of this term. When the Court releases opinions in a given day, the most senior Justice's opinion receives the next number, so next Monday, that opinion will be 43. But because they release in order of reverse seniority, the opinions of the day can't be numbered until the opinion of the most senior Justice is released. Thus, R numbers aren't assigned until that final opinion of the day is released.

By the way, as a reporter I just want to give a shout-out to the first paragraph of Justice Kagan's opinion today, which has all of the information I need at the outset: Here's a sentence or two of background, here's the question before the Court, and (most importantly) here is the answer.

Thanks for joining, everyone. 19 opinions remaining - you can see the list on our statistics page. No word yet on the next opinion day from the court, but we'll have orders from this week's conference next Monday. We'll let you know if we expect opinions Monday as well, and if so, we'll be back for another live blog. See you all soon, and stay safe!
