Good morning and welcome to the live blog. Thanks for joining us! We will be starting in a moment.
-
First up this morning will be orders from last Thursday's Conference. (That is not a typo -- the Justices have now shifted over, as they do every year around this time of you, to meeting on Thursdays.)
-
There is a full list of petitions that we are watching on the blog: www.scotusblog.com
-
Good morning from the Court's press room. Bit of excitement around the Court as the new Attorney General stops by to pay her rspects.
-
For the last year and change, the Justices have generally only granted cases that have been relisted at least once, so those are the ones to watch in particular this week. And there are some pretty good ones, including the San Francisco gun rights case and the case involving bail for undocumented immigrants.
-
Thank you again for being here. This is a great service. Looking forward to petitions and later, Zivotofsky, Wynne, and/or Elonis.
-
The Court did not limit the grant in Gomez, so everything in the petition is granted.
-
No action on County of Maricopa v. Lopez-Valenzuela, the bail for undocumented immigrant case.
-
Requested a response to petition for rehearing in Kent Recycling v. Army Corps of Engineers. Interesting.
-
Kent Recycling is an Administrative Procedure Act case involving the Clean Water Act; it was denied in March.
-
Will Jackson v. San Francisco be relisted?
-
Does that mean that the other petitions submitted on May 14th are denied?
-
Of course, many of the petitions up for consideration will likely be denied. Are petitions in "unimportant" cases which end up in cert. denial archived anywhere? West/Lexis have a few, but their database coverage is far from comprehensive...and, of course, SCOTUS doesn't currently post them.
-
Looking at the stats page--is there any possibility anyone other than the Chief Justice is authoring Elonis? (Another fun fact from the stats page: Justice Ginsburg has never assigned a majority opinion.)
-
Lyle reports that the Court has denied cert. in a meaty tax case: Kuretski v. Commissioner, on the president's power to remove judges from the Tax Court.
-
How did people commonly find out about orders/opinions pre-SCOTUSBlog?
-
Since the CJ has already authored an opinion for March, someone else should be authoring Walker?
-
Why do they have cases (like O'Keefe v Chisholm from this order list) where they grant motions to file amicus curiae briefs at the same time they deny cert?
-
When will the Court next release opinions and what is its schedule for releasing opinions for the rest of May?
-
Do we know yet if there will be more opinion days this week?
-
How many cases might the Court issue decisions for this morning?
-
The court needs to issue nearly 5 opinions a week to get everything done by the end of June. Are they usually this backed up after all the arguments are finished?
